About the ProSharp AS1001 Portable-SC
The AS1001 Portable-SC is built for one job: delivering accurate, reliable sharpening results away from a fixed workshop. It is compact enough to travel with a team, yet precise enough that players can trust the edges it produces before an important game.
For many clubs, the AS1001 is the second machine – the one that travels while an AS2001 stays at the home rink. For others, especially teams without their own rink, it is the only sharpener they have. Either way, it tends to be used in short, intense bursts: a whole team before warm-up, several players between periods, a dozen pairs of skates on a tournament morning.
The AS1001 is one of the two ProSharp models we specialise in. For an overview and a comparison with the stationary AS2001, see our ProSharp machines page. ProSharp AS2001 and AS1001 overview
Who Relies on the AS1001
- Equipment managers of ice hockey teams – for away games, tournaments and road trips
- Clubs with several teams – an AS1001 for each team on the road, while the home rink has its own machine
- Teams without their own rink – where the AS1001 is the only sharpening option
- Coaches and academies running camps and clinics at different venues
- Figure skating clubs travelling to competitions
For all of them, the worst moment for a breakdown is exactly when the machine is needed: an hour before the game, far from any workshop. Regular checks and a proper repair when something goes wrong are the best insurance.
Common AS1001 Problems We Repair
Most AS1001 problems are caused by the same thing that makes it useful – it moves. These are the issues we see most often:
Alignment drift after transport
Vibration in vehicles and the occasional knock gradually affect how precisely the machine holds and guides the blade. The first sign is usually edges that are slightly uneven, or results that differ from what the machine produced at home.
Skate holder and mounting wear
Repeated setup and packing put strain on the holder and the mounting points. Play in the holder shows up directly in the edge – and it tends to get worse with every trip.
Grinding wheel issues
As on any sharpener, the wheel wears with use and must be dressed correctly to keep the right profile. On a portable machine, knocks during transport can also affect the wheel and its mounting.
Cables, plugs and switches
A machine that is plugged in and unplugged at a different venue every week puts far more strain on its cables, plugs and switches than a stationary one. Loose connections can cause the machine to cut out or not start at all.
Dust collection and housing damage
Grinding dust has to be collected wherever the machine is used. Worn or damaged dust collection parts, cracked covers or housing damage from transport all reduce performance and can let dust into the machine.
What Our AS1001 Full Service Includes
Our full service brings the whole AS1001 back to good working condition, with special attention to the parts that suffer most from transport. It typically includes:
- Thorough cleaning, removing grinding dust from inside and outside
- Check and adjustment of alignment and the skate holder
- Check of the mounting points and fastenings
- Check of the grinding wheel, its mounting and dressing
- Check of the motor and drive
- Check of cables, plugs and switches
- Check of the dust collection and housing
- Replacement of worn parts from our own stock – only after your approval
- Final test before the machine is returned
As with every repair, we start with a condition assessment and send you an individual quote. You decide what is done. Our repair process
AS1001 Spare Parts From Our Own Stock
When a portable machine breaks down during the season, waiting weeks for a part is not an option. We keep our own supply of AS1001 spare parts, so in most cases the repair can start as soon as you approve the quote.
Equipment managers who look after their own machine can also order parts directly. Send us the name or number of the part – or simply a photo – and we will reply with an offer. Typical AS1001 parts include grinding wheels, skate holder components, cables and switches, and dust collection parts. ProSharp spare parts
Looking After an AS1001 on the Road
A few habits keep your AS1001 precise for longer, trip after trip:
Before you travel
Clean the machine, check that nothing is loose and pack it in its protective case. Make sure the cable is stored without kinks or strain on the plug.
At the venue
Set the machine up on a stable, level surface. Before the first pair of skates, check that it runs smoothly and sounds as usual. Sharpen a test blade if you can.
After the trip
Remove grinding dust before packing it away, check the holder and the cable, and make a note of anything unusual. Small issues reported early are quick and inexpensive to fix.
Before the season and big tournaments
Have the machine professionally checked when you can manage without it – in the off-season, or a few weeks before an important tournament. Sharpener maintenance
Signs Your AS1001 Needs a Technician
- Edges are uneven or differ from what the machine produced before
- Players say their skates feel different after sharpening on the road
- The skate holder has play or does not clamp firmly
- The machine is louder than usual or vibrates more
- It cuts out, will not start, or only works when the cable is moved
- The case, covers or housing are cracked or damaged
- It has travelled a full season without a professional check
What to Include in Your Request
A good description helps us understand the problem quickly – and sometimes shows that a spare part alone will solve it:
- The model – AS1001 Portable-SC – and, if you know it, the serial number and age
- What you notice – the symptoms, when they started and whether they followed a trip
- Photos or a short video – of the machine, the affected parts and, if possible, a sharpened blade
- How the machine is used – how often it travels and roughly how many skates it sharpens
- Any deadline – an upcoming tournament or the start of the season
- Your country, so we can advise on shipping
Plan the Service Around Your Season
For a team, the real cost of a sharpener breakdown is not the repair – it is a weekend of games without reliable sharpening. The simplest way to avoid that is to have the AS1001 checked when the team can manage without it.
The off-season is the ideal time: there are no games, and the machine can be fully serviced without pressure. If the AS1001 is used heavily, a second check during a natural break – such as a holiday pause or the weeks before playoffs and important tournaments – keeps it reliable when it matters most. Clubs with several machines often send them one at a time, so a sharpener is always available for the teams.
Tell us your schedule when you contact us. Knowing your deadlines helps us plan the assessment, the quote and the return so the machine is back with you in time.
Bought a Used AS1001?
Portable machines often change hands between clubs. A used AS1001 can be a smart buy, but its travel history is usually unknown – how many trips it has made, how it was packed and whether it was ever dropped. A full service before you take it on the road tells you exactly what condition it is in and brings it back to reliable working order.

ProSharp AS1001 – FAQ
Do you repair older ProSharp AS1001 machines?
Yes. We repair and service the ProSharp AS1001 Portable-SC, including machines that have travelled with teams for many seasons. Send us the details and we will tell you what we can do after a condition assessment.
Why does a portable sharpener need more frequent checks?
Because it is transported and set up again and again. Vibration in transport, knocks and changing surfaces gradually affect alignment, mounting and connections – even when the machine looks fine from the outside.
When is the best time to service an AS1001?
Before the season, and again before important tournaments or long road trips if the machine is used heavily. That way it is checked when you can manage without it, not when you need it most.
Do you have AS1001 spare parts in stock?
Yes. We keep our own supply of spare parts for the AS1001, so repairs can usually start as soon as you approve the quote. You can also order parts directly from us.
Can I send my AS1001 from another country?
Yes. Being portable, the AS1001 is one of the easiest machines to ship to our Budapest workshop. We welcome orders from all over Europe and communicate in English, preferably by email.
